Where the Mayer runs

The Mayer is a binational river: it starts in Argentina, crosses into Chile and empties into Lago O’Higgins/San Martín, the deepest lake in the Americas. The Carretera Austral crosses it about half an hour before Villa O’Higgins. Under the road bridge it looks lazy, but the canyons are upstream.

The run

The first descent was made in January 2011 by an international team who expected an easy afternoon and spent three days reaching the take-out. Their put-in was above the Margarita ranch, for a run of more than 20 km. Rivers of Chile tags the Mayer class IV–V.

Before the second canyon there is a rough escape trail on river left that reaches the road in about 40 minutes.

Season and flows

The only documented descent was in January. We don’t have a published flow range, and how hard the second canyon is depends strongly on the level.

How to read our Mayer gauge

Our Baker page shows the DGA station Río Mayer en Desembocadura, near where the river enters Lago O’Higgins, below the canyons. Because there are no published reference flows for the run, use it to compare days and trends, and judge the canyons by scouting.

Access

Drive the Carretera Austral south toward Villa O’Higgins. Just after the Mayer bridge, take the first left, which leads toward the put-in area. It can be done in one long day with a very early start, but the first-descent team recommends preparing for two.

Safety

This is remote, committing big water with at least one unportageable-at-river-level hazard. Carry overnight gear, know the escape trail, and scout the second canyon carefully.
