Río Pascua guide: short, enormous outflow of Lago O’Higgins to the Pacific, expedition-only whitewater, seasons and today’s live Pascua flow.

The Pascua leaves the northwest arm of Lago O’Higgins/San Martín in the Capitán Prat province of Aysén. Although it is only about 67 km long, its basin is among the largest in Chile because of the huge lake that feeds it. Near the lake it runs fast through rapids, falls into Lago Chico and drops again on leaving it. The Río Quiroz, fed by a glacier of the same name, joins from the left; below that the valley widens to around 10 km, with meanders and marshy ground, before a final set of rapids and a broad delta at a fjord on the Pacific side. The Bravo lies to the north and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field to the south and west.
The Pascua is not a recreational day run. Kayakers who have attempted it describe days of bushwhacking and headwind flatwater with loaded boats, portages around whitewater far beyond normal limits, and a box canyon with hydraulics “bigger than houses”. A team of expedition kayakers paddled it as part of what they called the Patagonia Triple Crown with the Baker and the Bravo.
Lower down, a sea kayak expedition put in where a new road reaches the river and paddled about 28 km to the coast in a single hard day, battling strong winds that whipped up the river’s surface, before continuing to the Jorge Montt glacier.
There is no published class rating or section length for the Pascua’s whitewater.
The Pascua’s flow rises clearly in summer, driven by melt from the glaciers and snowfields around the lake. We have no published runnable flow range.
Our Baker page shows the DGA station on the lower Pascua above the Río Quetrú confluence (11711000-1). Because the river drains a very large lake, it changes slowly and stays big. The Pascua is a separate river from the Baker and the Bravo, and its numbers are never added to theirs.
Access is via the Carretera Austral south of the Mitchell fjord ferry toward Lago Quetro. A new road toward the Pascua valley has been under construction, so check the current state of the road locally before planning a trip.
Huge volume, extreme remoteness and violent winds make the Pascua a serious undertaking for any boat. Treat it as an expedition with full self-rescue capability.
Only as an expedition. Its whitewater is extremely powerful, and parts have required long portages.

Provisional real-time data from DGA Chile. Always scout and check conditions on the river.
