Where the Liucura runs

The Liucura flows through the valley northeast of Pucón, between Lago Caburgua and Huerquehue National Park, and joins the Trancura system just above Pucón. Steep creeks such as the Río Nevado feed its upper reaches.

The lower Liucura

The classic run is the lower Liucura: cold water, year-round flows and class III read-and-run rapids. The exception is the last major rapid, La Leona, which comes soon after the junction with the Trancura. The run takes about 45 minutes to an hour. A well-known play spot about 1 km below the put-in works best at low water in February and March.

There is also an upper Liucura that is only worthwhile in the higher-water months; part of it can be reached by putting in on the Coilaco.

Put-ins and take-out

Season and flows

The Liucura runs all year. Rivers of Chile doesn’t give a flow range, but notes the play spot is best at the low flows of late summer.

How to read our Liucura gauge

The Liucura has its own DGA station, Río Liucura en Liucura, shown live on our Pucón page. Below the confluence the Trancura and Liucura flows add together, which is why La Leona is bigger than anything above it. The Liucura reading also serves as the downstream proxy for the ungauged Nevados.

Safety

The water is cold even in summer. La Leona is the crux, so scout it if you don’t know it. Don’t leave valuables in cars at the take-out.
