Río Nevado guide near Pucón: a short class V+ steep creek by Huerquehue, when it runs, access and how to use the Liucura gauge as a proxy.

The Río Nevado (shown as “Nevados” on our site) tumbles off the Picos del Caburgua, at about 1,950 m, and is one of the upper tributaries of the Liucura. The run sits just outside Huerquehue National Park, in a canyon thick with native bamboo. Local paddlers scouted it on foot and completed the first descent in December 2004.
Rivers of Chile describes it as a full-contact class V+ steep creek of about 2 km, dropping from about 600 m to 475 m, an average of roughly 62 m per km. Expect a bit of everything:
The Nevado only runs in late spring and early summer after significant rain or snowmelt; late November and December is usually the window. It can be paddled at low and medium flows, but the source is blunt that high water would be deadly. No numeric flow range is published.
There is no official gauge on the Nevado. Our Pucón page shows the Liucura gauge as a proxy, because it is downstream, together with an experimental, unvalidated formula estimate. Neither is a measurement of the creek. Use them only to tell whether the Liucura basin is rising after rain or snowmelt, and always look at the creek yourself before committing.
From Pucón, head east and stay on the road to Lago Caburgua instead of turning onto the international road. After about 7 km turn right toward Huife. Pass the turn for Parque Huerquehue / Tres Saltos, continue about 1 km to Huife, then take the next left toward Lefincul and cross the Liucura (here called Lefincul) bridge. Park before the road gets very steep, then walk about 2 km up the steep dirt road to the bridge over the Nevado; the put-in is just upstream.
This is expert-only creeking with mandatory drops and limited portages. Bring elbow pads, a throw rope and a team that has run hard creeks together. Don’t go at high water.
Class V+, about 2 km long, according to Rivers of Chile.
No. We show the Liucura gauge as a downstream proxy plus an experimental estimate.
