The Puelo is a binational river. It begins in Lago Puelo, inside Argentina’s Lago Puelo National Park in northwest Chubut, crosses into Chile and forms Lago Inferior. On the Chilean side it collects the outflows of several lakes, including Las Rocas and Azul, plus the Río Ventisquero. In its middle course it receives the Río Manso, its main tributary, then forms Lago Tagua Tagua and finally reaches the Pacific in the Reloncaví estuary at the village of Río Puelo, east of Puerto Montt. Its flow is fed by both rain and snowmelt.
The Puelo has no single classic day run in the guidebooks; outfitters describe several very different stretches:
Specific lengths and grades vary by source and flow, so check locally before committing.
Commercial trips run from October to April. Because the river is both rain- and snow-fed, expect rises after storms and during snowmelt. We don’t have published runnable flow ranges for the Puelo’s sections.
Our Puelo page shows two DGA stations on the main river: Río Puelo en la Frontera, at the border, near the top of the Chilean river, and Río Puelo antes Junta con Manso, further down above the Manso confluence. The gap between them is the water added by Chilean tributaries like the Ventisquero. Below the junction the Manso’s flow adds on top, so the river below Tagua Tagua is bigger than either reading.
The lower valley is reached from Puerto Montt along the Reloncaví estuary toward Cochamó and Río Puelo; a ferry crosses Lago Tagua Tagua. The upper Chilean Puelo near the border is remote, and many visitors arrive on the lake route from Argentina.
Much of the valley is remote with limited road access. The canyons below the border are serious, and rain can raise the river quickly. Go with local knowledge or a guide.
Yes. Local operators run class III rafting trips, generally between October and April.
