Where the Espolón runs

The Espolón drains Lago Espolón and flows through the valley right beside the town of Futaleufú before joining the Río Futaleufú. It is one of the Futa’s three main Chilean tributaries, together with the Río Chico and the Río Azul. The water is famously clear.

Paddling sections

Rivers of Chile rates the Espolón class II–III and describes it as a gentle river with occasional play. It has been a go-to training run for beginner kayakers in the Futaleufú area for decades.

A gorge on the Espolón known as the Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo) is the one part of the Futa’s tributaries that is not paddled.

Character

Mellow, roadside and very clear, with small waves and a few play spots. The lower run is also a handy way to reach the Inferno Canyon section of the Futaleufú, which is far harder.

Season and flows

The Espolón sees most visitors from December through April. Our sources don’t give typical flow ranges for its runs, so use the live gauge and the trend rather than a fixed target number.

How to read our Espolón gauge

The Espolón has a real DGA station, “Río Espolón en desagüe Lago Espolón”, at the lake outlet. Our Futaleufú page shows it live. Because the station sits at the top of the river, small streams can add a little water by the time you reach the lower run, and the lake smooths out sudden changes. The same reading is part of how we split the Futaleufú’s flow between its tributaries.

Access

Everything is close to Futaleufú town along the road to Chaitén. Campgrounds at Puente Espolón and near the confluence are common meeting points; respect private land and ask before parking.

Safety

Easy rapids, but the water is cold, so dress for a swim. Beginners should take out before the Futaleufú confluence unless they are ready for big-volume water downstream.
